The Beautiful Arctic Fox
What do you know about the majestic Arctic Fox? The spectacular little creature is one of the most unique animals on the face of the earth.
It's smart and has survived extreme hardship and extreme cold and in some areas of the world "FACES TERMINATION" from plant earth.
According to Blue Planet, "This unique fox is not endangered world wide and it is estimated that there are several thousand foxes left in the wild. Two arctic fox populations are endangered, however. One in Russia has been reduced to around 90 animals because of a mange caused by ear ticks introduced by dogs. The second in Fennoscandia (Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Kola Peninsula) was caused by over hunting around the turn of the century. The total number of breeding pairs there is about 140."
Let me give you a little insight into the personality of the Arctic Fox. This animal is not a lap dog, it is a great hunter and its beautiful coat turns white in the winter allowing the fox to blend into the country side. Never under estimate this animals ability to fight.
It is pretty but the teeth of this creature can plant deadly wounds on other animals. Many people look at this animal and mistake its beautiful coat for passivity. The Arctic Fox can be vicious if necessary but most animals in the wild have been programed to hunt for food and the fox is an exceptional hunter.
A few quick facts about the fox: Size: Arctic foxes can range from 2.3 to 3.5 feet (.76 - 1.1m) in length, in addition to their 12-inch (.3m) tail.
At the shoulder, they stand around 9 inches to 12 inches (.2 - .3m) tall.Weight: Arctic foxes range from 6.5 to 21 lbs (2.9 - 95kg). Female arctic foxes tend to be smaller than males.Lifespan: Usually around 3 to 6 years.
Defenders - More information on the Fox I don't understand why humans think they need the fur of animals to put on their shoulders. It just does not make any sense. Of course years ago when other alternatives didn't exist it was understandable but today, give me a break. It is absurd to kill an animal for a rich person to look good.
Global Warming and Other Threats Defenders at Work Defenders of Wildlife strongly supports the passage of national legislation that takes immediate steps to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions to address the root cause of climate change.
At the same time, Defenders is advancing legislation to help reduce the impacts global warming will have - and in many cases is already having - on habitat and wildlife like the fox.
In addition to being prime targets of the fur trade, some fox populations have also fallen victim to diseases spread from domestic dogs.
Also, the fox is losing ground to the larger red fox. As their name suggests, arctic foxes are specially adapted to thrive in the cold winters and thick snows of the far north.
Where conditions are less extreme, however, this highly specialized species is generally out-competed by its cousin, the more adaptable red fox.
As global warming takes its toll and the snow-line continues to recede further and further north, the range of the fox shrinks, too, giving way to the northward advance of the red fox.
How will this article make any difference in the survival of the Arctic Fox? It will not if you don't get up off your butt and decide to go to the arctic and stand watch over the animal. Did you read that last sentence? It was a joke.
We can't guard all the animals on the endangered species list but we can demand a stop to the sell of fur in the USA and other countries. We have to do what we can where we are in order to make a difference in this animals life.
The truth is only a small majority of people actually give a damn. Most of the world is so caught up in their own little causes they forget about the fox and other animals. Believe me, I am not an activist but I do believe we should help when we can.
Why don't you do a little research on the subject. No, most people could careless about helping a fox in a remote section of the world. But, you can do paste a few pictures of the fox around the house so you can show your great great grand kids what it look like. If the damn fools don't stop fur harvesting all we will have is pictures.
Do me a favor please, take care of your own animals. Many people, not all but many will not even take care of the animals they have let alone a Fox. Give your dog and cat a chance and click on a few of the links I am going to supply.
WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Why don't we start the ARCTIC FOX PROTECTION SOCIETY! That would be so cool. If any of you want to help with the formation of this society contact us with ideas.
