Aromatherapy - Does it Work?

What do you know about aromatherapy? If you know anything you know more than I do at this moment.

I know aroma is an odor and I therapy is something people do when they have a marriage or drug problem but when you put the two together it doesn't make any sense. Smell therapy, OK, if it works it works but does it work. Does this type therapy work for physical, psychological or other problems in people's life's. Let's take closer look at this weird type of therapy and see what falls out of the research broom.

Does Aromatherapy Work?

Does this type therapy actually do anything other than making you feel and smell a little better. It seems like a stretch to think that what you smell would help your thinking, mood or bring any relief.

According to a study conducted at Ohio State University aromatherapy, "One of the most comprehensive investigations done to date on this type of therapy failed to show any improvement in either immune status, wound healing or pain control among people exposed to two often touted scents.

While one of two popular aromas touted by alternative medicine practitioners lemon did appear to enhance moods positively among study subjects, the other lavender had no effect on reported mood, based on three psychological tests."

This study does not show any real results from using aromas to change or alter a mood. However, logically it has been proven odors do affect sexual desires and other physiological factors in humans. If you think a smell will not affect individuals then why don't you lock a person in a room with a full cat liter box and see what happens. I promise the person locked in the room with stinky cat manure will have a psychological reaction, anger.

I believe various odors or aromas do affect how a person feels but I do not believe it can change a person's thinking. Most psychological problems respond to cognitive therapies and in severe cases chemicals can be used to change thought patterns.

Aromatherapy Has its Place

What is aromatherapy good for? I am so glad you ask. The Smell FactorTo better understand aromatherapy benefits, it helps to know how your body processes smells. The sense of smell is pretty powerful. In fact, the body can distinguish around 10,000 different scents!Amazing, isn't it?

According to Essentials of Aromatherapy.com, "As scents are inhaled, the smell travels across the olfactory nerves located inside the nose and then up into the part of the brain that controls our moods, our memories and our ability to learn. This area is called the Limbic System and when stimulated it releases endorphins, neurotransmitters and other 'feel-good' chemicals.

Wow! That's pretty scientific stuff… not to worry, in a nutshell, what all of that means is that smells have a subtle way of effecting your mind and emotions. Just think of the way you feel when you sniff the scent from a fresh bouquet of flowers versus your reaction when you smell something not so fresh like garbage or burnt toast. A big difference right?" For more information click here. Essentials of Aromatherapy
