Buy Bamboo - Save a Forest!
Bamboo is absolutely incredible. Before doing the research on this subject my idea of bamboo came from natural growing fields of bamboo along the swamps in Louisiana. My minds eye pictured long, skinny bamboo poles used to shoot darts. I guess my mind remember the old Tarzan movies where the natives shot darts. I don't know but I do know bamboo can help save a tree.

The first question I had about buying bamboo was where does it come from? I don't think the Louisiana people paid much attention to the bamboo. However, I do remember using a bamboo fishing pole. We called them cane poles.
Bamboo comes primarily from Central America countries of Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I would assume it grows in many places around the world but the largest cultivation efforts are coming out of Central America.
Today I exchanged a few emails with Stephane Schroder who is one of the leading experts on bamboo. He and his partner started a company called, Guadua Bamboo Costa Rica. Now these two guys know all there is to know about bamboo. I suggest you take a good look at their site.
I want to address one more question. According to Stephane's site Guaduabamboo.com bamboo can save tons of hardwood.
He says,"Bamboo also captures CO2 and converts it into oxygen, 35% more than regular trees; therefore it plays a vital role in a healthy eco-system. Recent studies indicate that the potential for atmospheric carbon dioxide fixation in the first six years of Guadua's growth from new sowings is 54 metric tons per hectare - a fundamental discovery that facilitates participation in the international system of trading emission rights and will bring additional benefits to the investors and farmers who plant and cultivate guadua, that produces zero emissions!
It is also important to point out that using guadua in industrial processes would significantly reduce negative environmental impacts on native forests, since guadua becomes a substitute for timber, thus reducing the pressure on the tropical jungle."
