Green Predictions Green Schools - Do you know how many people can't read or write in the USA? What is more important graduating students who have basic reading and writing skills or a building that save energy?

According to This Report- Forty-two million adult Americans can't read.

  • Fifty million adult Americans are limited to a 4th or 5th grade reading level or can only recognize a few printed words.
  • The number of illiterate adults is increasing by 2.25 million people each year.
  • The number of illiterate adults includes nearly 1 million young people who drop out of school before graduation - 400,000 legal immigrants - 100,000 refugees - 800,000 illegal immigrants - and 20% of all high school graduates.
  • Illiterate people are missing out on 237 billion dollars total each year in money that they could be earning if they knew how to read.
  • The total amount of money being spent on illiteracy by the federal government is at more than ten billion dollars each year, which grows steadily.


going green image WHAT HAPPENS TO A PERSON WHO CAN'T READ OR WRITE? Think about it for a minute. They can't pass a drivers test, fill out an employment application or do anything else the requires reading.

I wonder if someone helps them fill out welfare applications. This is serious stuff. Green schools needs to include a few billion on actual education as well as energy saving, don't you think.

Now the federal government is considering a big increase in its spending on school construction -- with your money.

Already, as federal taxpayers, we pay $70 billion a year for K-12 education, much of it going to teacher salaries and school lunches.

Wow, that is a lot of money. Do you think it is money well spent? What is more important reading, writing or green?
