Green Tips: Be Patient but Persistent

The old slogan, "Rome was not built in a day" is a good slogan for going green. Green tips will help but take it slow and keep it steady. If you look at all the information regarding a green, healthy standard of living you can get extremely overwhelmed. So, take it slow but keep moving forward. If you move to fast you run the possibility of burning out but if you train yourself and family you have a better chance of going green for life.

Remember Patience and Persistence

I remember running the 440 yard dash in high school. I was not trained to run this type race. I could throw a shotput, pole vault and other field events but run a long race was not something I could do. The boy who normally ran the 440 was hurt and the coach asks if I would fill in for him. I reluctantly said I would and it like to have killed me.

I started out like a bullet. I rounded the first curve in the lead. Down the straightaway I was still leading. Then on the last curve every muscle in my body locked up. I fell to the ground thinking my life had ended. I started out fast but I couldn't finish the race because I didn't train myself to run that sort of race.

The same thing applies to going green. If you train yourself to throw the recyclable goods in the right bin, cut the lights off when you leave, and eat the right food you have a good chance of winning the green race. However, if you start out trying to rebuild your home energy efficient, paste solar panels on the roof and buy all organic food you run a good chance of burning out. If you are a seasoned pro-greener, then of course this doesn't apply. However, most of the USA/world is just learning how to live this new life. It is not complicated to go green but it does take time to learn all the facts about living green.

Take your time and do what you can when you can. Rome was not built in a day and living a healthy, Eco-friendly life might take a while to accomplish. One more quick side note. Going green does mean protecting the environment but it also means living healthy. Living healthy is protecting the environment.

52 Tips for Going Green

I am going to give you a bunch of green tips which might help in your transition. Pick a few of them and practice.

Seattle at Home made a list of 52 ways to live green. Here a just a few and the link to all 52 tips.

  • A laptop uses just a quarter of the power required by a desktop computer.
  • Contaminants are tracked into homes on the soles of shoes. Consider becoming a shoe-free household. Clever designs for shoe storage near the front door can keep entries clutter-free and indoor air cleaner at the same time.
  • Generating enough electricity to cook for an hour in a standard electric oven creates 2.7 pounds of carbon dioxide. Here's a list of what can do it for less: toaster oven, 1.3 pounds over 50 minutes; slow cooker, 0.9 pounds over seven hours; and microwave, 0.5 pounds over 15 minutes.
  • If a vehicle's tires have less than recommended air pressure, gas mileage will suffer. Determine the correct pressure level from the small plaque likely found just inside the driver's-side door, but possibly on a rear doorpost, in the trunk/latch area, the glove box, or even on the sun visor.
  • Wrapping a water heater with insulation can keep as many as 1,000 pounds of global-warming CO2 a year out of the upper atmosphere.
  • Using cold water can save up to 80 percent of the energy required to wash clothes.

GREEN TIPS FOR HEALTHY LIVING!

  • Purchase fruits and vegetables that are organic. Organic foods avoid the use of pesticides. This is better for the environment, as the produce is grown naturally.
  • Cut down on fuel usage. Try walking to places instead of taking your car. If that is not possible, consider carpooling or taking public transportation systems, such as buses or trains when you can. The less fumes in the air the better for all of us.
  • Recycle household items. Give old clothes as a donation to places like Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Use rechargeable batteries. Organize a neighborhood yard sale to get rid of things you no longer want or need.
  • When gardening, create a compost pile for fertilizer. Don't opt to buy fertilizers from stores.
  • Use a canvas bag that can be used over and over again when you go grocery shopping. Do not accept the plastic or paper bags that the store offers.
  • Invest in a water-saving showerhead. You can find these low-flow types online at Enviro Friendly Products. Help conserve water by taking this step.
  • Consider buying things in bulk. It saves you money and requires less packaging materials.
  • Save energy by installing a programmable thermostat to heat and air condition your home.
  • Pure soap is biodegradable and breaks down completely. Choose a soap that is pure, such as Dove. Avoid soaps with synthetic scents or colors.
  • Make a bird feeder out of recyclable products, such as a milk carton. Feed the birds and help the environment at the same time!
