The Holistic Approach to Treatment

The holistic approach to medicine is a viable alternative to contemporary medicine. The human creature is triadic(body, soul, spirit) in nature. Treating a physical problem in a human is only partial treatment. To treat a complete human it takes the natural approach.

When God created man, he created us with a body, soul and spirit. Now you may not believe in creation and that is strictly your business. Yet, this approach to healing a complete human takes a complete approach. If you place emphasis on only one aspect of a medical problem, you miss the objective, complete healing. Yes, if a person is seriously ill the prime target is to treat the one area affected. However, when a person is seriously or not so seriously ill it affects the emotion, the mind, the family and the spiritual life. So, with that in mind let us take a closer look at this approach to healthy living.

My Experience

I am going to repeat a few paragraphs, involving my personal experience, from the page alternative medicine.

In 1979, I contacted a virus, which affected my heart and lungs. The lining around my heart and lungs filled with fluid. The problem they called paracarditis developed into massive pericardial problems. Eventually they performed heart surgery and cut a pericardial window. The never did kill the virus and today it is attached to my liver or so they say.

After the surgery, the conventional treatment with steroids and pain killers continued. I became addicted to both types of medication. Finally, in desperation I went to see a holistic Doctor named Richard Furr MD in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He was able to treat me with nutrition and supplements and the immediate problem was gone. His type treatment, today called alternative medicine worked for me and I know it will work for you. Today I don't have any problems from the virus but I do eat right, get plenty of rest and take vitamin supplements when necessary. Now, this does not mean this treatment will work for you but it did work for me. I promise it is worth the research.

After Dr. Furr treated the immediate physical problems, I still had the addiction problem. Removing the pain killers did not treat the psychological carving for mental relief. I went to treatment for drug addiction and I will have to deal with that aspect of the problem for the rest of my life.

Because of the addiction, I went through a divorce. Of course, the emotional, mental difficulties needed to be addressed. Do you see the need for holistic treatment? My faith failed so spiritual recovery was necessary. My mind, my thoughts needed changing so I had to deal with cognitive issues. Truthfully, it will take the rest of my life to sort through all the issues this one illness created.

The modern medical approach needs a change. A pill is not always the answer, however the drug companies and many doctors believe it only takes a pill to recovery. Wrong, a pill might help with depression but what it the root cause of depression. You must deal with the complete individual and all the circumstances of the situation.

I am aware this is a simplistic approach and I have not covered every illness and every situation. You have to make up your own mind on this subject and review all choices. I am not saying ignore your doctor's advice. I am saying treat the complete person not just one area of the person.

This is an excellent article outline some of the history of alternative medicine. The following is the "Holistic Health" chapter from the critically acclaimed book, The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Body-Mind Disciplines, published by The Rosen Publishing Group in 1999

AHHA President, Suzan Walter stated in this report, "The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that the key factors influencing an individual's state of health have not changed significantly over the past 20 years. Quality of medical care is only 10%. Heredity accounts for 18% and environment is 19%. Everyday lifestyle choices are 53%. The decisions people make about their life and habits are, therefore, by far the largest factor in determining their state of wellness." Susan Walter

I am not an expert on holistic medicine. I have learned from experience different ways to approach my health issues rather than run to a doctor every time I hurt. I want to recommend a good site on holistic medicine which will help you learn more about these important issues. Click on this link for more A Guide to Holistic Health A Guide to Holistic Health
