Lead Poisoning Fish and Birds

Did you know lead poisoning from lead fishing weights is killing thousands of birds and fish each year. It is time to make a change in how we catch fish, don't you think.

I was eating supper or dinner as it is it called in some areas of the USA. What ever it is called I was eating my meal, minding my own business and suddenly without any warning I read the back cover of a Doritos bag. No, it wasn't me eating junk food it was my wife. Well, I did eat a few of the spicy, little critters. Oh well, I have a long way to go before I go completely green in my diet.

On the back cover of the bag the picture of a Mike Browne jumped out at me and spoke. Actually, it didn't speak but the words on the package did. It said, "Get The Lead out of Fishing". What in the world is this doing on the back of a Doritos bag? I picked up the bag and began to read.

Mike Browne a young man from MA had gone fishing with his day and wondered what happened to the lead. Let me tell you how it reads on the bag, "One day while fishing with his day Mike wondered what happened to the lead fishing weights that were lost in the water. The answer shocked him: 3000 tons of poisonous lead is lost in the U.S. waterways each year, killing countless fish and birds. Mike decided to tell the world and has become an EPA recognized educator and activist. He's even working to pass a Massachusetts Senate bill that restricts the use of lead in recreational fishing.

After reading this on the back of the bag I started thinking about the lead weights. I have lost so many of those things I could build a tower from my losses of lead fishing weights. Honestly, I had no idea the lead would kill the fish and birds. I don't fish any longer but if I ever do I will use something other than lead as a weight. The lead poisoning of fish is real and it will poison humans just like it does a fish.

In any form lead is poisonous to humans. If a lead fishing weight is handled or swallowed it can result in death.
