5 Steps to Living Green Without Losing Your Sanity5 Steps to Living Green Without Losing Your Sanity By Emily Jacques My toddler son had thrown yet another handful of dirt. Smack! It met its target: all over the recently laundered towels I had just hung out to dry. Sighing with exasperation, I picked him up and deposited him inside the house, then tried to ignore his screams of fury as I finished hanging up the laundry. Why does being green have to be so hard? I asked myself as I trudged back inside the house. I made every meal from scratch, washed the dishes by hand, and was an expert in the three R's of reduce-reuse-recycle. And that was in addition to my other housecleaning duties and trying to keep up with a rambunctious little boy. I was driving myself crazy. I believe many people today feel overwhelmed by the challenge of improving the health of our planet while trying to survive in a busy, high-tech world. Sometimes it seems impossible. It certainly seemed so to me that one frustrating laundry day. But the truth is, even in the modern-day world of state-of-the-art appliances, flat-screen televisions, and Hummers, every person can make a positive impact on the environment and still keep their sanity. The following steps helped me regain mine. - Have realistic "green" expectations. My main problem was that I wanted the time to be able to do everything "the old-fashioned way." However, because I was my son's sole caretaker during the day I had to give myself permission to use time-saving conveniences. Instead of trying to hang all the laundry up outside on good weather days, I began hanging up clothes that didn't need de-linting and put the rest in the dryer.
- Take baby steps. Entering into the world of living green is like any task-you have to start slow and small, or risk getting overwhelmed and tempted to give up. If you haven't been recycling, start by recycling one kind of material. If you want to garden, try one tomato plant and some flowers the first year. Replace your light bulbs with LEDs one at a time, as they go out.
- Do what fits easily into your schedule. Shop for sustainably-made products online. When grocery shopping, choose eco-friendly house cleaners, chlorine-free diapers, and organic produce instead of the "non-green" items you used to buy.
- Resist comparing yourself with others. If you read about someone who is planning to buy a teepee and move out into the middle of the desert, don't feel guilty for loving your house! On the other hand, don't judge them for being "extreme" or "weird." After all, who knows-you might be doing the same thing, with great joy, ten years from now.
- Keep learning and growing. Subscribe to e-zines that give tips and inspiration about green living. Check out your neighborhood library and bookstore for print resources about sustainable lifestyles. You never know when you'll find a great idea you can incorporate into your life-without going crazy, of course.
Giving myself permission to use the clothes dryer might provoke a frown from the "green gurus." But my son and I are the happier for it. Not to mention the fact that my son gets another bonus: a mommy who still has her sanity. Emily Jacques is a natural health nut, mother, and online wellness coach. Living Green is a Choice
Be a "Decider" in Your LifeBe a "Decider" in Your Life By Shelli Thompson Have a heart of a "Decider" Take your first step today because "A journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step". Have your feet been stuck in the same place for too long? Shuffling to the right and to the left and mostly backwards instead of forwards? Are you gauging the direction of the wind? The wind consists of the wasted breath of lesser beings and they have NO POWER OVER YOU. The wind blows criticism, gossip, opinion and un-truth. The power to control the direction of your life belongs to you alone. Exercise that power today and take the first step and plot your course because your destiny is assured because you are passionate about your vision for the future and your success. Before you open your eyes in the morning, create excitement for the day to come. Excite yourself about the opportunities that the new day brings with it because the possibilities are endless when you move forward, never slipping back into the dark thoughts of doubt, self pity and un-happiness. Let people know your vision for the future. When they listen and actually hear what you have to say and they see the truth and belief in your eyes they will follow because they will want to claim your vision for their own. Each day know that you have done everything to move the mountains that stand in your path to success. Let the dream of your future dominate your thoughts during the day and while you sleep at night. Never apologize for your dream and never let go. Your dreams and aspirations are great. I have always felt if I let my dream go and failed to pursue it my life would have little meaning, My very existence consists of my hopes, my dreams, my vision and my passion. A person without a dream has never had a dream come true. All of our problems become so much smaller when we face them. Make your decisions with your heart and do not put off till tomorrow what you can do today. If you put if off until tomorrow you will put it off until the next day as well. Confront your problems and fears and watch them melt away. Fear is an illusion that is created in our brain and problems are just an opportunity to find a solution and move forward. Do not procrastinate, make a decision and move forward. It might not be the right decision but you can make that decision right. Be passionate about your vision Chart your course into destiny Make decisions with your heart Don't let fear stand in the way of your decisions. When you have made the decision to move forward, do so with no hesitation even before you feel that you are ready. Do not fear failure or criticism and be resolute in your course. http://www.meetgordonandshelli.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Shelli_Thompson http://EzineArticles.com/?Be-a-Decider-in-Your-Life&id=3448417
