Pesticides and our Food!

Pesticides and our Food!

Take a bite of an apple and let the sweet juice roll down your throat and savor the wonderful taste of an apple. Remember and apple a day keeps the doctor away. While you are chewing the apple think about the poison in and on your apple. Oh me, poison on my apple... yeah, toxic chemicals are commonly used on fruit and vegetables in order to keep the bugs off the food. In fact, I just ate an apple right before receiving an article from Priscilla Fliehmann on the danger of pesticides in our food. I wish I had washed the apple a little better.

I know pest exist and they pose a danger to our food supply. There are safe alternatives to toxic chemicals and we will cover organic alternatives very soon.

I am fixing (fixing - a common term of a southerner) to veer off the subject for a minute. Let me ask you a question. Do you know what you are eating. Do you know the ingredients in your food? I am gong to get something from the cupboard and read what is actually in something we eat. Yeah, I still have junk in my pantry. I am changing but it takes time. Ok, I have in front of me a box of Albertsons Biscuit & Baking Mix.

I am turning the box around and I am going to write down what is in this stuff. Are you ready to be baffled? Here is the list: enriched bleached flour. Bleached flour why do you put bleach on flour. Oh my God I have been poisoned with bleach. Next, goodness I can even pronounce the rest of the junk in the box. Ok, let me try to spell this stuff. Here I go again - mono & diglycerides, sodium aluminum phosphate. Ok, that is enough. What in the world are they calling food.

Back to the subject, toxic chemicals and our food

How the Government Regulates Pesticides

A report by the Environmental Protection Agency says, "Before a company can sell or distribute any toxic chemicals in the United States of America, EPA must review studies on the toxic chemicals to determine that it will not pose unreasonable risks to human health or the environment. Once EPA has made that determination, it will license or register that pesticide for use in strict accordance with label directions.

Recognizing pesticides registered in the past may not meet today's current safety standards, EPA is reviewing and re-registering older pesticides, taking action to reduce risks where appropriate.

Before allowing a toxic chemical to be used on a food commodity, EPA sets limits on how much of a chemical may be used on food during growing and processing, and how much can remain on the food you buy. Government inspectors monitor food in interstate commerce to ensure that these limits are not exceeded. EPA also sets standards to protect workers from exposure to pesticides on the job.

The Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 sets a tougher standard for pesticide use on food. EPA will consider the public's overall exposure to pesticides (through food, water, and in home environments) when making decisions to set standards for pesticide use on food."

Please read this report closely. Notice the areas in red and read them again. There is no doubt, toxic chemicals are used on our food and remain our food.

"Reduce the risk," the report from the EPA states. Oh gee, so there is a risk. Are you willing to let your kids take the risk. Today, October 30, 2009 the world is panicked about the swine flu which is dangerous but not as dangerous as the chemicals on and in our food supply.

EPA says,"You and your family have a right to know under the law that in certain cases, such as economic loss to farmers, a pesticide not meeting the safety standard may be authorized. If this happens, EPA will work with grocery stores to inform you of such chemicals, foods that might contain them, and equally nutritious alternatives."

Where are the warnings in the store. I have never seen one in any grocery store. Have you ever seen a warming sign in your local store? If you have let us know about it. Take a picture and send it to this site.

Pesticides in our food? by Priscilla Fliehmann

Not all fruits and vegetables contain equal amounts of pesticides, some have more than others. Do you know how much and what kind?

In the US 888 million lbs of pesticides are applied each year, 3 lbs per person! Toxic chemicals travel in the air, water, food we eat, and affect the entire planet.

According to the website What's on My Food," Industrial conventional agriculture are widely known for the use of chemicals that causes soil erosion, water, and air pollution. Pesticides are endocrine disrupters, neurotoxins, linked to cancer, affects reproductive system and immune system. In Europe, chemicals such as Atrazine were banned. Atrazine, a hormone disrupter was found in 71% of US drinking water.'

How much are we truly exposed to harmful, toxic chemicals? It is smart to be aware about toxic chemicals; how it affects the environment and health. I discovered this helpful website, a project of Pesticide Action Network, which keeps us informed.

There you'll find scientific research of pesticides, studies, and global organization committed to educating and offering solutions to protect the environment
