Pet Care - Yuki & Abby Go Green
Traditional pet care, in many cases, is obsolete and needs an over haul. Are you going green with your animals? We have three pets, two Shih Tzu dogs and a male cat. Taking care of pets in our house is simple, treat them like kids. I am not sure what sort of cat we have but it is orange with strips. Sort of like a tiger but a lot smaller. We love our animals and we treat them like babies. I never dreamed I would call my self daddy to an animal. But today good pet care with our kids "animals" is extremely important to us. If you look at the pictures on the right you will see Abby the little white female and Yuki the black and white male. The female is my wife's dog more or less and Yuki goes with me every place I go. It is really weird how my ideas about animals changed through the years. We, my family of origin had dogs, no cats, my mother was afraid of cats so no cats. Yet, we had an occasional dog along the way. We treated it like a dog. It stayed outside and we fed it table scarps and we really didn't pay much attention to the dog. OH, all of the dogs we had during childhood had the name lady. I guess they were all female but it seems like my dad named anything and everything lady. I have no idea why dad named them lady but but...I don't know. I do not remember anyone in the 50's taking a dog to a vet. I am not sure why but I believe it had to do with money. We couldn't afford to spend money taking a dog to a doctor. It was hard enough feeding four kids so the dog had to take whatever care it might get. Today, oh goodness, if the dog has a cold we take it to a vet and we also try to stay green in our medical treatment of our precious animals. We have discovered various ways to go green with our pets. First, we do our best to feed our dogs and cat nutritionally based food products. We also try to stay away from any toxic chemicals. With fleas we have tried to use lemon juice but it hasn't worked very well. We do use other products to manage fleas because of the radical danger from fleas. Me and Yuki - I love that dog!
Yuki is a southern dog and his pet care is simple, pet me. We bought him in Hattiesburg, Mississippi about 9 months after Katrina. We lost so much and we just wanted to make a new start with a new dog so we bought this furry little puppy. When we bought him he fit in the palm of my hand. Today is twenty something lbs. He is a big Shih Tzu and a wonderful friend. I don't know I would do without him. If you knew me you would know it is different for me to get attached to anything let alone a dog but he is more than a dog. He is my best friend. Well, my wife might read this page so I better say she is my best friend and the dog is my good friend. The cat's name is Mel short for Mellow and he insist on good pet care. He is anything but mellow around me but around my wife he is mellow yellow. I mean is doesn't do anything but lay in her lap like a baby. When I walk by he looks up with those killer eyes as if to say, you better leave me be and I do. I play rough and he plays rough but he has claws and I don't so I come up on the short end of that stick. I do love the cat but he sure ain't like my Yuki. We have some good information on pet care for cats and cat litter. With pet care for the cat we buy a cat litter that is safe an non clay based. Clay clumping litter can harm and animal and actually kill a cat. NEED INFORMATION ON PET SITTERS CLICK HERE Pet Sitters DANGER According to an article by Marina Michael on thelighthoueonline.com 1. Clumping litter is designed to form a hard, insoluble mass when it gets wet. It also produces a fine dust when stirred (as when a cat scratches around to bury a recent deposit). And these clumping litters absorb many times their weight in fluids. 2. When cats or kittens use the litter box, they lick themselves clean; anything their tongues encounter gets ingested. Kittens especially tend to ingest a lot of litter when they are first learning to use the box. 3. Once the litter is inside a kitten or cat, it expands, forming a mass and coating the interior-thus, both causing dehydration by drawing fluids out of the cat or kitten, and compounding the problem by preventing any absorption of nutrients or fluids. She also said this about clay litter, "lthough regular clay litters do not pose the potential health hazards that clumping clay kitty litters do, they do have their own problems: * Mining clay is hard on the environment. * Clay litters contribute significantly to landfills. Unlike many of the litters on this page, they cannot be composted, nor do they biodegrade. * Most, if not all, clay litters contain silica, which is potentially harmful. From a Web page at The Andersons' Web site (manufacturers of FIELDFresh): "Crystalline Silica, once airborne, shows the ability of causing Silicosis. This can cause incurable lesions on the lungs and throat, rendering that tissue useless for transferring oxygen. Crystalline Silica is a naturally occurring element, also known as Quartz, and is found in some of the clay litters. ... According to government standards, silica is a known carcinogen and a Prop 65 material in California."Marina Michaels What she does recommend is, "f you want a non-clay, clumping, scoopable litter, there are really only three choices that I know of: * SWheatScoop, which is made from wheat and is indeed a clumping and scoopable litter. The key difference between it and clumping clay litters is that the wheat clumps are said to fall apart when they get wet, therefore not posing the health hazard that an indissoluble clump would. * WonderWheat, which I have never tried but sounds as though it is the Australian equivalent of SWheatScoop. * The World's Best Cat Litter. I hesitate to recommend this litter, for reasons listed under the product description, but it is still one of the best alternatives available and, I have heard, works in automatic cat boxes." Green Pet Choices
Whether it's all natural, green, holistic or organic, greener pet products are heavily influencing the choices pet owner consumers are making for their pets, as well as the decisions pet business owners are making for their companies. In the October 2007 Newsweek article "How to Cut your Carbon Pawprint", market-research firm Packaged Facts provides statistics of U.S. retail sales of natural pet products expected to reach $1.3 billion in 2007, up from $558 million in 2003. By 2012, the market should reach $2.5 billion.
