Rhubarb - A Healthy Laxative
I have to be honest, I have never tasted Rhubarb in my life.
Remember I am from the South Mississippi, transplanted in California by hurricane Katrina, and in the south, I didn't know anyone who ate this plant.
I do remember seeing it in the store and thinking it was a red piece of celery.
OK, I might be showing my "red neck" but the truth is the truth. Momma always said, "Son be as honest as you can be".
I sound like Forrest Gump when I say those words.
The reason I am writing about this subject is that I recently read a page about pies and recipes and it sure sounded good. I love to eat and if it tastes good count me in.
Now that I am on the subject let me give you a brief background on this fruit, vegetable, plant… I am not sure what to call it but it is red and long like a red piece of celery.
According to Wikipedia this plant, " is a group of plants that belong to the genus Rheum in the family Polygonaceae.
They are herbaceous perennial plants growing from short, thick rhizomes.
They have large leaves that are somewhat triangular shaped with long fleshy petioles.
They have small flowers grouped in large compound leafy greenish-white to rose-red inflorescence.
While the leaves are toxic, the plants have medicinal uses, but most commonly the plant's stalks are cooked and used in pies and other foods for their tart flavor.
A number of varieties have been domesticated for human consumption, most of which are recognized as Rheum x hybridum by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Now does that tell you anything? It has medicinal purposes is interesting.
Rhubarb as a laxative
In addition to a great tasting pie this plant has the unique ability to function as a strong laxative, according to the source I read.
So, if you need a laxative it might be good to use this as a substitute for over the counter junk which creates more problems than it is worth.
I believe God gave us all the natural ingredients we need to take care of our body if we will only use them.
