Solar power takes on new meaning with solar ovens. Solar ovens change the way people view cooking.
Conventional gas and electric ovens will be outdated.
I don't know about that but these ovens are helping a lot of people in undeveloped countries survive.
The Rotary is helping people worldwide cook food, purify water, and lower carbon emission using solar power to energize ovens/cookers.

Solar Power - What is a Solar Oven?
Solar Ovens or cookers are just what they sound like, ovens and cookers powered by solar power. These ovens require little maintenance and are easy to use. Many humanitarian organizations are promoting their use worldwide to help slow deforestation and desertification, caused by using wood as fuel for cooking.
There are at least 65 different types of solar powered cookers and ovens. I think I will make my own.
I was talking to a friend from Visalia, California and she said she made her own oven. It sounded cool and she said it did work. She cooked hot dogs and other small items in her solar oven.

- Concentrating sunlight: Some device, usually a mirror or some type of reflective metal, is used to concentrate light and heat from the sun into a small cooking area, making the energy more concentrated and therefore more potent.
- Converting light to heat: Any black on the inside of a solar cooker, as well as certain materials for pots, will improve the effectiveness of turning light into heat. A black pan will absorb almost all of the sun's light and turn it into heat, substantially improving the effectiveness of the cooker. Also, the better a pan conducts heat, the faster the oven will work.
- Trapping heat: Isolating the air inside the cooker from the air outside the cooker makes an important difference. Using a clear solid, like a plastic bag or a glass cover, will allow light to enter, but once the light is absorbed and converted to heat, a plastic bag or glass cover will trap the heat inside. This makes it possible to reach similar temperatures on cold and windy days as on hot daysAlone, each of these strategies for heating something with the sun is fairly ineffective, but most solar cookers use two or all three of these strategies in combination to get temperatures sufficient for cooking.
A few different types of cookers/ovens
- Box Cookers: The box cooker is made in the form of a box. It can be made from cardboard, wood, or glass. This box is insulated with anything, which holds heat, rags, glass etc. The box cooker has been around since the 1700's and can be seen in almost every country in the world. Extremely simple in design and all you have to do is place it direct sunlight and presto change-o you have cooked food.
- Panel Cookers: Panel cookers are made from shiny panels which direct sunlight into the cooking bowl.. These cookers are not complicated and any one can make a panel cooker.
- Parabolic Cookers: These cookers work as well as conventional ovens. The process is complicated and requires supervision and understanding to operate.
- Hybrid Cookers: A hybrid solar oven is a solar box cooker equipped with a conventional electrical heating element for cloudy days or nighttime cooking. Hybrid solar ovens are therefore more independent. However, they lack the cost advantages of some other types of solar cookers, and so they have not caught on as much in third world countries.

Make your own solar cooker
From my research, I discovered making one of these babies is not that hard. I think I could even make one and I am not a maker of things. All you have to do is gather a few simple materials like a box, aluminum foil and some sun.
Stick the food in the middle and wait a few seconds and the food is ready to serve. Kidding, it is a little harder than that but not much. I haven't made one yet but I am going to give my wife a project.
No, I am going to attempt to build my own solar cooker. Believe me; if can make one anyone can. I promise to report back with the results.
Ok…I did it. I made my own cooker. It worked. It took a while to warm the MacDonald's hamburger… Seriously, the (green hot dog) did cook. Ok, the truth is it was a regular nasty hot dog with all the chemicals. Anyways, it took a while but it worked. Solar Cooking. We will keep researching this subject so stay tuned.
