I was born in 1951 and smoking was a common occurrence among most adults. My mother and dad both smoked and I started when I was 13 and didn't think smoking was a big deal.
It seemed like everyone smoked. The preacher and deacons in the church we attended smoked. As far as I can remember, smoking was acceptable and encouraged. I remember cigarette advertising being a major part of television viewing. The Marlboro man was the hero, cancer seemed to be rare or at least I don't remember hearing about cancer.

Today, things are different. After being deceived for years, the truth about cigarettes and cigars is out. Smoking can cause cancer and other serious illness. The chemicals in cigarette smoke are polluting the environment. It is time to quit. If you haven't decided to stop smoking today is the day.I know this is a tall order and it might not be easy to stop smoking but it is possible. However, it is possible. I smoked for forty years. I didn't think I would ever stop smoking. I had resolved to smoke until I died. Today and for the last several years I have not smoked a cigarette. To me it is a miracle and I am so thankful I don't have to light up. How did I quit? I am not really sure how I stopped smoking. To be perfectly honest, one day I said I had enough. I hated the smell. I hated blowing smoke out of my mouth and nose and I just stopped. I believe faith helped. I don't even want a cigarette. I can't believe I smoked for so many years. But today I am free and I care about the environment.

Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, is the single largest contributor to indoor air pollution when a smoker is present. Studies of secondhand smoke indicate that air pollution in general can affect the heart and circulatory system. Previous research has established that exposure to the secondhand smoke of just one cigarette per day accelerates the progression of atherosclerosis - thus it is plausible that even low doses of air pollution could negatively affect coronary functions.

OK, so you smoke outside so your children will not breathe the second hand smoke. In your mind you think, it is ok to blow the smoke into the air but then the smoke mingles with other pollutants and harms the environment. Please start thinking stopping for one day, just one day at a time.

I know it is hard to stop any addiction and smoking is an addiction but you can do it. When you reach the point when you are sick and tired of drawing in the smoke, blowing out the smoke and smelling worst than a dead horse you might think about quitting for good.
