Wind Power: The Ultimate Power Source

Wind Power - The Past and Our Future!

The night skies flickered with brilliance. Each star sang its own song and the boat glided silently through the South Pacific. The wide, white sails of the boat flapped in the gentle breeze and the sailors chanted a soft song about home. I can picture this in my minds eye view. The wonderful, miraculous power of the wind. Sailors on an adventure to different worlds. I have never been on a sail boat, maybe one day.

For years sailors used the wind in their sails to explore the continents of the world. With out the power of the wind the USA would still be an isolated continent.

Today we are returning to this wonderful source of power, the wind and windmills.

Windmills of the past bring back enchanted memories of childhood. Throughout the Oklahoma oil patch in the 1960's windmills were still used to pump water from wells. I remember wondering how the windmill pumped the water from the ground.

Living in Mississippi for years my idea of California was limited to big cities, gangs, earthquakes and wild fires. Yes, California has all of those un-pleasantries but the central coast is different. Rolling hills, I call mountains, and plenty of ranches and grape vines. In this area of the country windmills are noticed every so often.

Finally, the wind is given the chance to prove its power again. Nothing replaces nature and wind power is nature at her best.

In this section we will discuss important aspects of wind power.

Wind power the big picture

4. Can I make my own windmill?

5. Will wind power replace goal, fossil fuels?

6. Can we depend on wind power?

The Big Picture

This alternative form of energy is simple but seems to be industrially complex. According to reports In 2008, wind power produced about 1.5% of worldwide electricity usage; and is growing rapidly, having doubled in the three years between 2005 and 2008. Several countries have achieved relatively high levels of wind power penetration, such as 19% of stationary electricity production in Denmark, 11% in Spain and Portugal, and 7% in Germany and the Republic of Ireland in 2008. As of May 2009, eighty countries around the world are using wind power on a commercial basis.

Wind power is converting wind into a useful form of energy, such as electricity, using wind turbine.

A positive fact about wind power it emits on harmful emission like fossil fuels. It is a great alternative fuel and will continue to grow through out the world. WikiPedia Wind Power

How does it work?

You would think it would as simple as putting up a few windmills. In essence it is simple but generating enough power to supply a city or town is difficult. In fact, at this point the demand for electricity cannot be met with wind power alone.

Large scale wind farms are constructed to capture the wind and direct its power into turbines. These turbines produce energy into electricity.

Wind is captured, turned into energy/electricity then sold to the consumer.

The future is bright and research on new methods of using this alternative energy source is growing daily.

One day, hopefully this power will replace fossil fuels but today we still depend on oil to drive the nations and the worlds industries and homes.

Home Windmills

Using windmills to generate electricity in the home is an option. The start up cost can be expense but the long term affects of using windmills at home will pay off. One the largest factors to consider is the reduction of your own carbon footprint. This type of alternative energy is great for the environment and hopefully more people will choice to place the windmill in their back yards.

Can it be used in the city. Yes, you need to check with your local county building office to make sure but as far as I know a windmill can be used in the city.

How much does it cost on an average to buy a wind converting system for your home? It appears they come in all sizes and shapes. Yet, the average cost to have a full scale system installed in your home runs all $20,000. Sounds like a lot but remember in the long run it will save you money.

There are smaller units which run around $1000 dollars but produce less energy.

Can you make your own?

Sure you can make your own if you are the make your own type person. I am not a fixer of things but my wife is and we are thinking about building our own windmill. It would be so cool to have a windmill in the woods.

I refused to advertise a companies product without full knowledge of the company and product but you can buy kits to make windmills.

If you decide to buy the kit make sure the company is reliable, have a warranty and the site is a valid website.

If your decision is to build your own windmill please take a picture and send it to us. We really want to know about your success.
